If your mortgage company pays
If your taxes are paid through an escrow account, your lender pays the Treasurer from that account. The bill may still be mailed to you. Check with your lender before paying it yourself, or you may pay twice. After a refinance or a loan transfer, check your parcel record to make sure the new servicer has paid.
Late payment penalties
Ohio law sets the penalties (Ohio Revised Code 323.121):
- 10% penalty on the unpaid amount if a half isn’t paid by its due date.
- Half of that penalty is waived if you pay the full amount within 10 days after the due date, so the cost drops to 5%.
- Interest is then charged on taxes that stay delinquent, at a rate set by state law.
- Paid within 10 days of the due date (5%)
- $104.28
- Paid later (10%)
- $208.55
If you can’t pay on time, call the Treasurer before the due date and ask what payment plans are available. Interest keeps adding up on taxes that stay unpaid.
Delinquent taxes
Taxes still unpaid after the due dates become delinquent. The Treasurer publishes a delinquent tax list, and long-unpaid taxes can lead to tax foreclosure. Properties that don’t sell at foreclosure can end up at the Auditor’s forfeited land sale. Our Stark County tax sales guide explains that process. The Treasurer’s delinquent tax page has the current options.
Refunds and corrections
If you paid too much because of a clerical error, such as a missing credit or a wrong value that was later corrected, the Auditor’s office handles refunds for clerical errors. If the Board of Revision lowers your value, any overpayment is credited or refunded after the decision. Call the Auditor at (330) 451-7357 to ask which applies to you.
Finding your bill or balance
Your tax bill shows each half, any credits and special assessments. The tax section of your parcel record in the county’s Real Estate Search shows charges and payments, but the county says that data can’t be relied on for amounts due. For a payoff or a closing figure, call the Treasurer.
Common mistakes
- Paying several parcels in one online payment. The portal takes each parcel as a separate transaction.
- Mailing on the due date from a drop box after the last pickup. Only the USPS postmark date counts.
- Paying the Auditor. The Treasurer collects. The Auditor can’t take tax payments.
- Forgetting the second half. The July payment is easy to miss if you don’t pay through escrow.
