The 3-year tag costs the same as three 1-year tags, so its advantage is convenience rather than savings. The permanent tag costs $140 once. It pays off only if your dog lives in Stark County for more than 10 renewal seasons, so it suits young dogs whose owners expect to stay.
Which license term to choose
| Term | On-time cost | Renew | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1-year | $14 | Every December 1 to January 31 | Older dogs, or if you may move soon |
| 3-year | $42 | Every third renewal season | Owners who want fewer renewals at the same total cost |
| Permanent | $140 | Never, for the life of the dog | Young dogs likely to stay in Stark County 10+ years |
Whichever you choose, the license stays tied to your contact details through DocuPet, so update your address and phone number if they change.
The renewal window and the late penalty
The renewal season runs from December 1 to January 31. The county adds a $14 penalty to licenses bought after January 31. For mailed renewals, the envelope must be postmarked by the deadline. DocuPet describes the same rule as a $14 late fee if you don’t license before February 1.
The same penalty applies when a new dog isn’t licensed within 30 days of ownership. DocuPet sends reminders before your license expires by mail, phone and email, so keep your contact details up to date in your account.

Puppies, new dogs and dogs moving in
A puppy doesn’t need a license until it is older than 3 months. Between July 1 and December 1, you can buy a $7 puppy license for a puppy 3 months old or younger. Outside that window, license a young dog with a regular tag once it is older than 3 months. A dog that is already older than 3 months when you get it must be licensed within 30 days.
A dog adopted from a shelter or rescue follows the same 30-day rule. If the shelter already licensed the dog in Stark County, ask the Auditor’s office to transfer the license to you for $5.
Kennel licenses
If you keep dogs in a kennel, the county offers a kennel license sold only at the Auditor’s office. The county lists it as $10 plus $70 for five tags, with extra tags at $2 each and a late fee after January 31. Call (330) 451-7354 to confirm the total and whether your situation qualifies before you go.
Lost tag, new owner or moving away
- Lost or damaged tag: a replacement tag costs $5.
- Giving or selling the dog to someone: the license can be transferred to the new owner for $5.
- Found a dog with a tag, or lost your dog? See our dog tag lookup and lost-dog guide. DocuPet’s HomeSafe team is at (877) 239-6072.
Why the license matters
Beyond being required by state law, a license links your dog’s tag number to your contact details. If your dog gets out, whoever finds it can use the tag to reach you, and the county’s licensing records help return dogs home. Licensing also avoids the late penalty and any enforcement by the county dog warden, which is part of the Sheriff’s office.
Common mistakes
- Waiting until February. The fee doubles after January 31 for a 1-year tag.
- Forgetting a new dog. The 30-day clock starts when you get the dog, not at the next renewal season.
- Buying a puppy license for an older puppy. The $7 license is only for puppies 3 months or younger, and only from July 1 to December 1.
- Assuming a permanent tag moves with you. A license is issued by the county. If you move out of Ohio, check the rules where you move.
- Mailing on January 31 without a postmark. The postmark date counts. Drop it at the post office counter if you’re close to the deadline.
